Why do I need a root canal treatment?
In dentistry, an endodontic treatment refers to a procedure performed on the inside of the tooth, specifically in the dental pulp and root canals. The goal of this treatment is to save a damaged or infected tooth from extraction.
The dental pulp is the soft tissue found inside the tooth that contains nerve fibers, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the dental pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can cause severe pain and sensitivity. This is where an endodontic treatment comes into play.
At NuSmile Dental & Orthodontics, we specialize in providing comprehensive endodontic treatments to our patients. Dr. Lawrence Wu, DDS, uses the latest techniques and technologies to ensure a successful outcome for each patient.
There are several types of endodontic treatments, each designed to address specific issues related to dental pulp and root canal infections. The most common type of endodontic treatment is root canal therapy, which involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp, cleaning the root canal, and sealing it to prevent future infection. In some cases, endodontic retreatment may be necessary if the initial treatment does not successfully resolve the infection or if a new infection arises. Another type of endodontic treatment is apicoectomy or root-end resection, which is usually performed when a root canal treatment hasn’t been successful, or an infection develops. This procedure involves removing the root tip and the infected tissue. Additionally, there is a pulp capping procedure, a preventative treatment used to avoid root canal therapy when a pulp exposure has occurred.
The signs indicating the need for an endodontic treatment can vary but typically include severe toothache, particularly when chewing or applying pressure, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures even after the source of heat or cold has been removed, discoloration or darkening of the tooth, and swelling, tenderness or inflammation in the nearby gums. Recurring or persistent pimples on the gums can also be a symptom of a deeper issue that an endodontic treatment may address. These symptoms could be indicative of pulp inflammation, infection, or decay. It’s important to consult with a dental professional if you experience any of these symptoms, as early detection can increase the effectiveness of the treatment and the chance of saving the tooth.
The most common endodontic procedure is root canal therapy, colloquially referred to as simply a “root canal”. This procedure involves the removal of infected or inflamed dental pulp from within the tooth. After the damaged pulp is thoroughly cleaned out, the now-empty root canal and the pulp chamber are disinfected and carefully enlarged to provide a clean, shapeable space for filling. They are then filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent future infections. The tooth is then restored with a crown or filling for protection and it continues to function like any other tooth. Root canal therapy is highly successful and often lasts a lifetime, although, on occasion, a tooth will have to be treated again due to new infections.
A root canal treatment is required when your tooth pulp becomes inflamed or infected – a condition that can stem from several causes including deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, large fillings, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma to the tooth. This inflammation or infection can lead to severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, and even darkening of the tooth. In the absence of proper treatment, it can also result in dental abscesses. The root canal treatment aims to eliminate the infection, prevent its recurrence, and ultimately, save your natural tooth. If you’re experiencing any discomfort or signs that may indicate the need for a root canal, we encourage you not to ignore these signs. Early intervention can prevent serious complications and the potential loss of the tooth. We are conveniently located at 1319 Blossom Hill Rd, San Jose, CA 95118.
