Dental implants are a surgical procedure that provides replacements for teeth that have been lost. Instead of being attached to the inside of the mouth, a dental implant is attached to the bone inside the jaw, which makes it much stronger and longer-lasting than other tooth replacement procedures. Dental implants can only be performed by a dentist with a background in oral surgery, such as a doctor of dental surgery (DDS). The cost of this type of procedure can vary depending on several factors, but the initial investment can actually save the patient money in the long term.
The total cost of a dental implant procedure is different in every situation and depends on a number of factors unique to each patient, including:
– How many teeth are being replaced
– The location of the teeth being replaced
– The number and type of implants used
– If any complications arise
– If additional procedures are necessary, such as a bone graft
– The geographic location of the clinic
– The dentist’s level of expertise and experience
– The number of imaging tests ordered
– Insurance coverage
What is considered a reasonable price will be different in every situation and can vary considerably; the dentist will provide the patient with an estimate of the cost of the procedure during the consultation.
Because dental implants are permanent appliances, they are typically the most cost-effective solution for missing or failing teeth. Some insurance plans will cover a portion of the cost of a dental implant, however basic dental plans do not typically cover advanced dental procedures like implants, so it is important to verify insurance coverage before scheduling an appointment.
Some insurance providers that do not offer full coverage for dental implant surgery may cover a portion of the cost equivalent to the price of conventional bridges or dentures. Many premium dental insurance plans cover up to 50% of the cost of the dental implant, although some may even cover as much as 80% of the cost.
The longevity of dental implants varies based on several factors, such as diet and overall health, but can last a lifetime if properly cared for with proper oral hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing and receiving regular dental checkups. Before needing to be replaced due to normal wear and tear, the crown fitted over the implant should last about 10 to 15 years. However, excellent dental hygiene can extend that life beyond 15 years, so it is imperative to brush and floss twice a day in order to get the most out of a dental implant. The location of the implant can also affect its longevity; implants toward the back of the mouth undergo more strain from chewing than implants near the front of the mouth. A dental implant only needs to be replaced if it becomes loose, develops an infection, or gets damaged. However, if the implantation was unsuccessful, which typically occurs in the first year, the implant may need to be replaced or another procedure may need to be utilized.
In most cases, basic dental policies do not cover dental implant surgery, however more inclusive insurance plans, often referred to as premium plans, may cover 50% of the procedure (in some cases more). Two important factors to consider are the annual maximum coverage (the limit on how much the insurance company will pay out in dental care annually) and pre-existing conditions (conditions that were present before the active policy date). Any dental costs that exceed the annual maximum coverage have to be paid out-of-pocket by the patient. Conditions that were present before the active policy date are not covered, even if the procedure is included in the new plan—the insurance plan is active on the date it was purchased (or later, but never before), so only new conditions will be covered.
